Gannett offers buyouts to veteran employees

Gannett, the media company that owns USA TODAY and 92 other newspapers, said Thursday it’s offering buyout packages to veteran employees, a move to cut costs and steer spending into a plan to create “a next generation media company.”

The McLean, Va.-based company, which was spun off in June from its former parent that now focuses on broadcasting, says the offer will be made to employees who are 55 or older with at least 15 years of service as of Oct. 12. “Certain business segments and departments” will be eligible, Gannett CEO Bob Dickey said in a memo to its staff of 16,000.

“The offer is completely voluntary and it’s solely up to these eligible employees as to whether they wish to accept it,” Dickey said.

Gannett didn’t specify the divisions or operating units that are eligible. The company also didn’t say if it had a target number of employees it wants to accept the offer.
