Canton reporter learns what rappelling is like

It’s not as scary as it looks.

I never thought I’d be hanging from a rope over downtown Canton, but I’m glad I was Thursday. I told my editor I’d be willing to rappel before realizing I might actually get a chance to follow through on that remark.

So, my pre-rappel feelings mirrored those of Raland Hatchett, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina & Stark Counties.

“I am nervous, excited, don’t know what to expect, but I know I got to do it,” he told me beforehand.

Hatchett, who joined the agency in April, said the idea of conquering the fear to go “over the edge” correlates with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission of helping kids overcome adversity.

Like me, it was his first time taking part in such an activity. I’m no thrill seeker (yet). The biggest rollercoaster I’ve been on is most people’s beginner ride, and I’ve never worn a safety harness.
