Ohio's tax-free weekend good for local businesses

The sales tax holiday in Ohio for back-to-school season begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

For the third year in a row, Ohio is offering a sales-tax break on clothing, school supplies and instructional materials. The tax exemption applies for pieces of clothing priced at $75 or less and school supplies or instructional materials costing no more than $20.

Retailers in Ohio, Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia are required to participate in tax holidays. In New Mexico, participation is optional.

This means here in Ohio, consumers can expect to receive the tax-break at all major retailers, as well as local ones. Eagle Creek Golf Experience and Amez Boutique are a couple examples of local retailers taking advantage of the tax-holiday. 

Amy Nevills, owner of Amez Boutique at 26 W. Main St., said last year’s tax-free weekend was the second time her small business participated. “It really caught on,” she said.

Nevills said she is confident this weekend’s tax holiday will have a similar outcome.

“Between Imagine Norwalk and the tax-free weekend, everyone is about saving a little money,” Nevills said.
