Ohio joins lawsuit to nix Obama overtime rule

Ohio is among 21 states that have sued the U.S. Department of Labor over a new rule that would make about 4 million higher-earning workers eligible for overtime pay, slamming the measure as inappropriate federal overreach by the Obama Administration.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Eastern Texas on the same day that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and more than 50 other business groups filed a legal challenge against the regulation.

Vice President Joe Biden announced the new rule during a visit to Columbus in May.

Under the rule, salaried workers earning up to $47,476 annually will qualify for overtime. That threshold had been set at $23,660. Employers will either have to pay overtime or limit hours for these salaried workers, meaning more employees will be working a true 40-hour week.
